Geographical Features of Amboori Grama Panchayat

Amboori Grama Panchayat is situated in the mountain folds and valleys at the foothills of Agasthyarkoodam Mountain, which forms part of the Western Ghats. The total area is 81 sq. km. Of this, people inhabit an area of 49 sq. km. The remaining 32 sq. km consists of water bodies, wildlife sanctuary and reserve forest. The area of each of these is given in the table below.

High Laterite Plateaus

These plateaus, which constitute 20 percent of the total area, are the highest region of Amboori Grama Panchayat. They are situated at an elevation of 40 to 120 metres above sea level. This region is located in Thodumala, the third ward of the Panchayat.

This area can mainly be classified into two types:

  1. Exposed rock formations
  2. Rock formations with only scattered and very little soil

Although shrubs grow in these areas, the vegetation mainly consists of grasses that sprout and grow abundantly during the rainy season.

Slopes

This region accounts for 73.5 percent of the total area of the Panchayat. Steep slopes are mainly found in Nellikamala, Kurishumala, Thodumala and in most parts of the ward.

Suitable soil is found only on the surface of the land. These areas generally experience water scarcity. Crops such as tapioca, banana, coconut, pepper and rubber are cultivated here.

Although the slope is predominantly from east to west, slopes also occur from west to east and from north to south.

Valleys

Valley regions constitute only 6.5 percent of the area here. Most of these areas are located in the wards of Amboori, Kudappanamoodu, Koottappu and Thekkupara.

Three streams originating from the plateau flow through this region. Most of the area consists of sandy laterite soil.
